    Mr. John Whitehead
    Chairman
    Lower Manhattan Development Corporation
    One Liberty Plaza
    New York, NY 10006

    Dear Mr. Whitehead:

I oppose the recent decision by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) to list all the names of those who died at the World Trade Center on September 11 without any recognition of the uniformed rescue workers as such. I write to encourage the LMDC to properly identify the rescue workers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The LMDC explains their intent is to “honor the loss of life equally and the contributions of all without establishing any hierarchies.” I do not understand how properly recognizing a rescue worker as a rescue worker establishes a rank or hierarchy over the civilians killed at the World Trade Center.  For example, many of the spontaneous memorials that sprang up around the city identified those lost by profession or why they were at the World Trade Center. There was no perception of rank or hierarchy toward anyone, whether rescue worker, bond trader, or food server.  The tragedy, the heroism, the loss and sacrifice were appreciated equally.

It is the obligation of any memorial to tell the truth and to inspire visitors to learn of the events detailed. A generic listing of the victims’ names will fail to do either.  How and why the people at the World Trade Center died, and how those who responded to the call of duty served country and humanity must be faithfully memorialized. Their loss and sacrifice obliges us to properly remember and honor them.

Please keep in mind that if there is no identification of the rescue workers as such, it may be that the only people remembered for sacrificing themselves that day would be, horribly, the terrorists.

    Very truly yours,

    Sample Message:

Please have erected at the World Trade Center a
Firefighters’  Memorial, that list the name, rank, badge number and
company of all the firefighters who gave their lives on 9/11/01, as requested by the Emerald Society, FDNY. I also request that the PAPD, NYPD and EMS be memorialized equally.
